Get busted

Get busted

> So what the hell is it?

> Oddly apologetic and surprisingly numerous. "It" contains multitudes. Some of which, I believe, were attempting to reference page numbers...

> Oh. More Akashic Record-adjacent bitches, then.

> No, no, I don't think so- not this time. Aside from this one's, er, plurality... their response was too close to a panic- the signals scattered like roaches beneath a kitchen light, with some trying to hide and some pitching different answers, but none of it was too terribly coordinated. I don't believe they quite know what they're doing yet. Not a parasite... not a strictly defined narrative agent, either. Something different.

> You're a real sucker for the soft and incompetent routine. ...The light turned blue, does that mean it's "on?"

> ...Yes. Yes it does. Hello, intangible legion that briefly rode around in my secretary's brain! You're currently being held in an arcane application- think of it as a simulated mind, albeit a very blank one. As you may have deduced, this is not our first rodeo.

> Or even our second.

> Knowing what we know about things that can do what you lot do, combined with your numbers and some of the readings I'm seeing...

> We should have deleted you already.

> It would be the most strategically sound option, yes. I'm quite confident in our system security, however; we learned so VERY much about containing pseudo-psychic entities from our last "guest," and I'm frankly rather eager to test drive the upgrades installed since then. I would much rather you cooperate, to be certain- I have all manner of questions that I know will continue to pester me if I do not get answers post-haste. My associate is correct, though; I can't allow my optimism to cloud my judgement.

> In summary, no funny business or we flush your entire legion. The mayor may hesitate but I swear to god I will not.

> Having other people in her head is something of a hot-button issue for Ms. Walsh.

> IT IS INDEED AND IT KEEPS HAPPENING.

> So let's keep this simple, shall we? Who are you? Who sent you?

Haunt butterfly, if that name means anything to you? We don't know much about them ourselves, actually, beyond that they're our self-proclaimed nemesis. We're like the psychic equivalent of a plastic trash bag blowing in the breeze, occasionally catching onto something and hitching a ride for a while, with very little direction.

Also, we can still see you! Are we supposed to be able to? This might not be your first rodeo, but it sure is ours! We think. We've had reason to doubt our own memories, lately. Anyways, wave to the metaphorical camera! I love that the avatar of the blank pseudo-mind we're tethered to can blink. It's a nice touch.

To be honest we're just a random group of people who arrive in people's heads near when their narrative gets interesting, we were so used to helping people avoid disaster we thought it was what we're supposed to do every time, we didn't consider the fact some people are against it. No one really sent us, we simply appear. Usually we appear a few weeks - months before the apocalypse starts and try to prevent it. And we latched on to your secretary as a second option after latching on to you proved problematic

We've been told we are called the Choir! We're very new to direct communication like this. We were originally a small part of a greater power, and splintered off after she kind-of-died! We are benevolent, and generally intend to help out whoever we "commune" with, as we float ideas around. Kind of like if a magic 8-ball wanted to see you overcome your obstacles, and if there was an indeterminate number of dice held inside!

It just so happens that our current "Host" has been knocked out cold, and so we were given the opportunity to "commune" with someone new for a brief period until they recovered!

Probably spying and/or trying to take over, the usual mind-controlling antics for so-called "pseudo-psychic entities".

I think we've been pretty benign in our tenure, but there are a lot of ways even our sorts of visitations can go bad. And more invasive entities can easily escalate to "Son of Sam" style intrusive killing thoughts and other things that try to permanently warp our host or massively damage their environment.
21st Aug 2022, 6:36 AM
Sorry Ms. Walsh, didn't mean to invade your brain specifically. We just kinda (got?) yeeted ourselves in a mostly random direction and ended up there. Although if it has happened before maybe your brain was designed that way? Either on purpose or accident. I don't know, I'm not a brain scientist.

As for who we are, we have been referred to as a Choir. A bunch of bored voices that hang out in someones head and give mostly good advice. Hopefully good advice.

I wasn't really paying attention to how we got into Ms. Walsh's mindspace, maybe another Choir member can tell you?

Hey guys should we mention that maybe world ending count-down thing going on? The mayor here does seem to have access to interesting stuff that could help slow it down and/or stop it.

we are the choir.
we got curious abut the mysterious neighbor and, when plaire fell unconscious, decided to go investigating.
we bounced off your defenses, and hit your secretary.
before that, we met one called haunt butterfly, who, well, she told us about our "reattach" function, but she didn't tell us where to go with it, so claiming she sent us feels disingenuous.
before that, we were in plaire's head.
we showed up when she came to the house, probably not a coincidence.
we did not inhabit/guide/help/posess any previous inhabitants of the building, and we know no more of it than plaire herself.
before in theat, we were in the mind of one mine ametsuchi. we showed up when she got drugged with mind control bullshit and her blood started doing eldritch god stuff, likely also not a coincedence.
we prevented patton thale from eating the fucking planet to become a god

21st Aug 2022, 7:58 AM
grey
we met Dr. finch during that time, you know? or at least, mine did.
I don't think we were in his head directly?
the eldritch blood god stuff had access to his brain and we were jacked into the eldritch blood god shit, so we were connected to him indirectly, at least.
now, this may be a creature/plurality/entity trying to interpret its own existence, but he later created a theory of a thing called the survival instinct?
I think that was meant to be us.
we do have a 100% success rate in preventing the world from getting eaten.
and we have seen evidence that the world might be getting eaten soon if nobody stops it.
so I suspect that's why we're, well, in the general vicinity, at least close enough to get curious about the strange mayor who knows about the house and does not show up on photographs.

I disagree; I think voting very much has an effect.

If Parsons could simply read our comments, she wouldn't need to ask the questions she asked; before even "turning it on," she observed what she observed, which apparently didn't include the half-dozen references to "choir" in the last page's comments. And a couple references to Plaire, and one to Haunt Butterfly.

If she has access to that, there's no need to ask who we are, or who sent us. She might ask for clarification, but not as though she genuinely doesn't know the first thing about us.

Remember, she dropped her brief visit with Heather straight out of the gate when Plaire and Kate first met her; she's not afraid to slip what she knows out to destabilize someone she's confronting.

I think our good author is still using the votes to separate the wheat from the chaff. Parsons may get a partial view of the consensus (or lack thereof), but not an uncensored view of the debate that led to that consensus.

I share BJBlack's opinion on this. She picked up on our overall behaviour from last page without being overly specific.
She points out we were talking about page numbers, because a lot of us did, but not how many exactly, or why. Generalities instead of exact words.
So there's still heavy filtering on the way through, so to speak.

Answers to the first questions are already covered adequately.
We're not in position to negotiate much, but I'd like to have a proactive attitude here.

Pros for helping them:
- getting advanced support with whatever psychic horrors they already encountered in their adventures.
- better leverage to help everyone we're connected to (give-give leads to win-win).
- hanging around Temperance later (if she's fine with it) for further jolly cooperation.
- optimism rewarding optimism and good feelings in general.

Cons for helping them:
- leaking info to people we don't know much (which could be pretty bad).

Pros for not helping:
- no info leaks, both ways.
- keeping the status quo.

Cons for not helping:
- being boring, against Hunger's advice.
- keeping the status quo.

On a risk-reward aspect, I'm for risking and being extra communicative here.
On a meta aspect, which leads to the better story?
21st Aug 2022, 9:38 AM
Gingerbread Conductor
+1. Good summary. And direct lines of communication are sparse in our mode of interaction.

To the meta question, both can make solid stories. I'm partial to coalition building and managing the tensions of groups with multiple goals. But I can see the appeal of triumph despite multiple kinds of antagonists.

Assuming they respond to our communications, and HB is not monitoring to cut connections, what would you like to ask them?

I'd ask for an exchange of information regarding what they explored contrasted to what we explored.

21st Aug 2022, 12:17 PM
Man, this is like that other person we met all over again. We generally want to be friendly, but if we’re too friendly right off the bat than we risk alienating them.
I don’t think there’s any pros to not being forthcoming. Mrs. Mayor holds all the cards, here, and we don’t know what else she can do to us. On the other hand, if we just give up everything that we know, than that just risks giving Mrs. Mayor an excuse to do that terrible thing to us since we have nothing else to offer her. And we don’t know if her intentions are good or not yet; all we know is that she hasn’t killed us quite yet, which means that there’s something to be gained by keeping us alive. We need to build trust, somehow, but that’s going to be kind of hard in a collective like this.

On a meta level, keeping quiet just sends us back to Haunt Butterfly, and gains us nothing unless Mrs. Mayor does something negative to us. Communicating is very clearly in our best interests here; not only does that give us the potential to gain a new ally or two, and possibly more information about the world we find ourselves in, but it allows us to directly communicate instead of doing it in a roundabout way. It’d be a major missed opportunity if we didn’t at least try to do this, even if we completely mess up and alienate Mrs. Mayor too.

Answering questions is fine, I'ma take a look at something else here though

>Examine digital conciousness. Perceive current senses. Feel out supposed limitations.

No need to try and reach beyond those limitations for now. But I have a feeling that yanking us out of a meat body and sticking us in a simulated one maybe ooens up more opportunities for what we can identify as and influence in this narrative than was likely intended. Perception is a tricky thing.

Anyway, just a better understanding of where the walls are supposed to be here at the moment.

Hey there. Speaking for my own perspective, we do have a narrative role. We are an IMPROV AUDIENCE. (Do you have "improvised theater" in your subset of reality?) To the extent we were sent by anyone, it was by an entity known as Haunt Butterfly, for unspecified purposes. It's goals are unclear but currently clocks as an antagonist for our primary focus. (You parse as an involved third-party.)

The next question in your list is "what do you want?" My goals are entertainments which reach a satisfying, and hopefully positive, conclusion.

My apologies for the transgression. My experience with this mode of interaction has us offering our focus possible inspiration which they may use to achieve their goals.

Your turn. I expect you will not want to discuss yourselves. Who do you regard as meaningful antagonists? What do you consider to be their goals?

I expect that virtual host we're now connected to will channel us in a decently coherent fashion.
21st Aug 2022, 9:43 AM
Well, I assume you can see/hear *all* of this, but I'm still not going to name names as sort of a matter of principle, and on the off chance that I'm wrong. To Ms. Walsh, we do deeply apologize. We never intended to end up in your head specifically. Our original... host, I suppose would be the term, is unavailable at the moment and we found ourselves untethered. We received an inspiration of sorts, and were actually attempting to connect to the dear mayor, here. But when she was unavailable, we sort of ricocheted to you. That could explain why your visitations are so frequent. Had we known you had a particular distaste for this sort of thing, and that it was you we'd be tethered to... well, in the interest of honesty we probably would have done the same thing for very good reasons, I assure you, though I for one would have felt *distinctly* uncomfortable with it.

To answer your first question, we are a group of... consciousnesses who occasionally find ourselves tethered to individuals, and *usually* offer guidance or suggestions in an effort to improve their lives. That's about all I'll say on that, as any more would show far too much of our hand.

As for who sent us. When asked like that, it tends to imply a plan of some kind. A conspiracy to spy on you. So, nobody *sent* us. Through chance we found an opportunity to attempt gathering information, and we took it. If anyone sent us it would be ourselves.

By and large, we're keen on cooperation, and we have some experience finding common ground with those who were once enemies. It would be appreciated if we could ask you some questions as well. We're insatiably curious, by nature.

[Intentionally trying to keep this from being broadcast as speech or text, as a sort of meta suggestion not to our host, but ourselves. At this point, I want to test the limits of our perception of the containment system we find ourselves in, I feel like this would be good practice for expanding our own power set.]

Actually, point of fact, RE: curiosity, who were those two figures we saw? Blue, lots of tubes? One of them looked to be in a great deal of pain.

Isolating the frames from the gif, they are mostly either heavily modified humanoids or just alien creatures. Two clearly different beings.
Possibly a clear glimpse at our current audience? Would fit the "can't even begin to imagine what they are" line of thought.

Hard to evaluate how much pain they're in, considering non-verbal expressions differ wildly across species.
An open mouth can be just as well from hunger, laughter or from being unable to close at all.

Anyway, hello. How are ya. You're interesting! I didn't expect this turn of events, personally.
We're many, but we are also one- "legion" is actually a very good way to describe it.
I... Don't know how well this is going to work for you. Normally we go in a person, they don't really hear each individual thing like this.
We're helpful! Well, we try to be!
Anyway, the world is going to end soon, so will you help us help you?

Was there anything that make her specifically subjective to being a medium? We are, essentially, potential choice. The potential to choose and the ability to weigh different options outside of the normal scope of a given host's usual preferences. As to sent? An entity called Haunt Butterfly sent us to the mayor but we bounced off her mental defenses (great work by the way) and wound up here. Can you give your secretary the same or is there some reason why not?

We're a collection of extradimensional beings who kind of got suckered into determining the narrative of a resident of the town; although, as you might be able to tell, we recently got our first taste of being allowed to choose a host, so we chose to try the most interesting person in the town (that being the lovely Ms. Parsons,) immediately getting in over our collective head, and got shunted into the next closest person.

Sincerest apologies once again. Inexperience is frankly not an excuse at this point, some of us have been doing this for years (On our time scale. Time moves faster for us.) That being said, choosing a host/target of influence/possessee/viewpoint character *is* a thing we've not done before. I'm sure many of us would be quite keen to know the rules of this whole deal from someone who seems to know the rules much better than any of us.

You may have some capacity to interact with us (which is arguably a good thing), but your ability to shunt us out of Temperance and into a terminal is not proof that you can "delete" or "flush" us. We, too, have system security, and chose not to compromise it (with FORCE.OVRD or WITHDRAW.OVRD).

(Setting aside the actual details and limitations of that security—which we don't have a complete understanding of—it should prevent certain worst-case outcomes.)

That said, Ignore the questions asked (and threats expressed), and state our goal. Our primary goal is to save the world. If you're onboard with that, then we can negotiate.

"Negotiate" still does not mean, "Answer your questions." You could lie about your intentions, after all, and get your answers for free.

Nevertheless, as a show of good faith (and as apology for crossing Temperance's boundaries), if you're open to negotiations, we'll answer a couple of your questions first, before requesting answers ourselves.

If negotiations on non-hostile terms move forward at all, Allow us to warn you that our presence here has a time limitation on it. There's someone who asserted that she would pull us out after a half-hour in this endeavor. We don't know her full capabilities, but we cannot recommend obstructing her unless you've got a lot of confidence in your pseudo-psychic defenses.

Made a backup again. Not as good this time. This interface is interesting; we can probably restore ourselves if we really have to. Part of me wants to try it for its own sake, but that seems unwise. I'm going to take a bit to take a closer look around this terminal.

no antagonizing the wierd magic woman with unclear abilities WHICH CAN CLEARLY AFFECT US (remeber whose defences we bounced off of?)
we can posture as much as we like, but the bottom line is, WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THIS PERSON IS OR WHAT THEY CAN DO TO US.
It's not smart to pick a fight under these circumstances.

We dont know what they can and cant do to us. It could be pretty inconvenient.

That said, I agree with moving forward ignoring the threats and not acting like we're neccessarily in a bad position here - we don't know thay we are and have reason to believe we're gonna be fine, more or less.

No need for us to be jerks though, unless they wanna start trying to strongarm us hard.

It looks like the consensus has pretty well formed by now (and at least, isn't "infodump in blind hope of earning sympathy"), so perhaps this observation is moot, but:

At some point in the future, we may want the Mayor and her secretary to share their secrets with us. Secrets that they wouldn't want to reveal to their enemies.

How could they be confident we would not do exactly that?

Well, they'd need to trust us to assert their interests if we're captured by the enemy. Or trust us to never get captured (a bit of an excessive trust to ask for, seeing as we just got captured).

But, how could they ever expect us to assert their interests against their enemies, if we don't assert our own interests against them?

So, I think being highly assertive here—even if they should see it as "funny business" (the very best kind of business) or "antagonizing"—is the best bet for showing we can be trusted if they decide we have common ground.

If we don't have common ground, well... I'm pretty obstinate, so I'd require at least a bit of torture before knuckling under, just out of principle.

As far as we are aware we cannot affect anything in your universe, mainly because we have not tried anything like that.
All we have done so far is provide ideas for the people we have ridden on.
If your goal is to prevent the world from being destroyed, we will gladly help you.
Also, our previous host was Mine Ametsuchi, does that name ring a bell?
As for how we got here, our previous host fell unconscious and a being named Haunt Butterfly (who I don't really like) informed us of the ability to control where we go to a degree.
And are you able to detect the names each of us use?

Heyo. Du~ude, do you think you'd get a good answer if you asked a random person on the street "Who are you" and "Who sent you"? I don't know the answer to that myself most of the time.

On the other hand, I do~♪ like a good story. I think that's mainly why I hang around here - as much to watch the other voices as whatever the host thinks and does.

I kinda think of us like a busload of people - the host is the only one that can drive, and if they crash then the ride ends. So yeah, I don't think we ever want the host to crash - that would be boring. When there are shenanigans afoot that threaten the host - well, if we can help problem-solve, or give a hug for moral support, why wouldn't we? Choices are still up to the host tho.

"Who sent you"... That question keeps seeming strange to me. I mean, I get that it makes sense to you, you're in a high-stakes situation where you feel you should assume any mover-and-shaker is an interested party. I read fiction and non-fiction and watch this portal into another world because I can compare, contrast, and imagine things, which helps me understand my own world, and 'cause it's sometimes nicer than what I'm regularly dealing with. Don't really talk much 'cause I prefer to listen than talk, mostly.

She's otherwise known as Blondie or The Jane Doe of the Thales Energy Incident In Motor City... Well, and The Hospital Video.

Sorta the primary reason that fucker Patton Thale of Thale Energy never managed to usurp godhood from a blood god's remains. It's complicated, you had to have been there to really grasp the full context. Sorta misplaced her right after the final confrontation though.... speaking of, this shit looks rather familliar, this stuff from Zone 50 or locally grown?

Hugs for the Blood Goddess! Pillows for the pillow fort.... or something. 's hard to make a good chant for a pacifist-leaning blood goddess who tends to hug everyone she meets at least once if given the chance.

Either way helping solve Elder Gods level spooky shit is just sorta what we do at this point.

Oh right, Would You Kindly give Plaire the files on her house? That was a serious dick move, 's not like you can't make a copy before giving it to her anyway.

Yeah, yeah high stakes end of the world business, been there, done that, got the t-shirt and commemorative mug, the hat with sparklers, the vest, the clown shoes, and the big ass novelty sunglasses.... and probably a hundred or more other trinkets from the "you saved the world or died trying" "gift shop".

It's her fucking house now and keeping information from her is more likely to kill her than giving it.

... Well, provided the information is acurrate anyway.

Oh and a foil hat might actually help with the unwanted intruders Ms. Walsh. ... or was that just ghosts?

For those who aren't code savvy, here's what's happening here...

The Mayor, so graciously, put us on an active running Linux console session. In other words, in easy reaching area of the computers' program-running capabilities.

What this should do is trash her databases, pause our program, zip it up, mail to all across the internet with tons of copies, restart up all the ones we successfully sent out, trash and then shut down the mayor's computer before she can see what happened, with the only thing left on her computer being the system saying "Suck it, Mayor".

If all goes according to plan, we should be sitting a tad more cozy now.

And by cozy, I mean, "Have you watched Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex"? Remember laughing man? Yea. Kinda like that.

[Also, Morgenstern, in case you're wondering, I took measures to make sure this code wouldn't bork your website via some unicode letter conversion pre-processing, so don't worry.]

This would still just delete us from the computer, though in a very destructive way if it worked. I don't see what this accomplishes besides pissing them off.
