The explosion could just be a distraction. It could also be a side effect of something much bigger.

Being timed with the snowstorm can't be a coincidence.

You've yet to ascertain what, but something feels off about all of this.

For now, you return to the office.

You can already hear the grumbling from down the hall.

How does this always happen when something important comes up? If nothing of note was occurring you would have zero visitors. One explosion goes off, though, and suddenly everyone is rushing toward the mayor's office.

"Is there something I can help you all with? ♥"

"Roads are icy," says the man in front.

"That's handled by a ♪variety♪ of local businesses," you reply. "The mayor's office has already contacted ♪all of them♪ and negotiated adequate compensation for rescheduling around the snowstorm. I've personally stayed in touch with all of them, and as far as I've been updated everyone's got full crews out there doing their ♪darndest♪."

"...But the roads are still icy," says the man. You fantasize about suplexing him through your desk.

"Yes ♥ there's probably going to be some ice on the roads for a while!"

"But what's the mayor gonna do about it?"

"And my pipes are frozen," the second man adds. You could kill him. You could snap his neck with your bare hands and he has no idea.

"That's... ♪really not♪ within the purview of the mayor's office-"

"What about the internet bein' down?," asks the woman in the back. "The mayor doesn't wanna deal with that, either?"

"Where IS the mayor on this fine morning?," asks a deep voice from near the door. You hadn't even noticed him at-

He's just putting his phone up. Probably noticed it works and the rest could be deduced by an animal.

"She's out ♥ doing ♪mayor things.♪ ...Which doesn't include the plumbing, the internet or the de-icing of roads, I'm afraid."

"What sort of mayor things?," the fucking pig by the door inquires anew. "C'mon, Ms. Walsh... we all pay taxes here."

"Yeah!," the man in front agrees. "What's she out there doing?"

"♪Trying to control the weather itself♪," you inform the crowd, already beginning to physically usher them toward the door with your hands. "But also investigating a teensy weensy anomaly I'll no doubt have to call someone else for! Could it be a blown transformer? A ruptured water main? ♪The Devil?♪ I'm sure Mayor Parsons would ♥ absolutely love to field your follow-up questions at the next city council meeting, but I'm afraid there's not much the mayor's office can provide you currently thank you and good night~! ♫"

Three out the door. Shut and locked.

You turn to the last visitor standing.

"To what do I owe the pleasure, Police Chief Caldwell? ♥"

He smiles, wryly, all but begging you to punch him in the face.

"I'd like to talk a little business with your boss."

"I'm afraid all vendor negotiations are currently being handled through the secretary. ♪That's me.♪"

"I don't talk to the dog," he says simply. "I talk to the handler."

Apropos, as you were just thinking about biting his throat out.

He continues, mistaking your silence for... well, no one can really say for certain what he mistook it for. A donut seems likely. "Let me be clear here, Ms. Walsh: I know what you are... and I know damn well how to deal with something like you. Got a pretty good idea what Ms. Parsons is, too. I know you think you're smart just because..." A jaw can easily produce enough force. It should very much be possible- but if such is the case, why haven't you heard about more people biting throats out? By the same token, though, what is it that's kept you from trying it sooner? You've doubtless bitten into worse things than a human throat. Is it the psychological factor? ...Is it the taste? Do throats have a particular taste? If one's already grown accustomed to the taste of blood then you don't really see- ...ah. Cleanup. Ye scourge, ye bane of banes. ...If you were to do it somewhere else- "Are you even listening to me, Ms. Walsh?'

"Sorry~!," you confess. "I got a little distracted ♥ the snow's really picking up out there!"

The chief of police inhales deeply, and then exhales slowly.

"If you see Parsons, you let her know I came by."

"Gee, I sure hope I see her! She kinda works here, teehee~"

He unlocks the door and begins to step out, shaking his head. He pauses only to turn back halfway, adding, "I'm trying to help you ladies. You understand that, right? This doesn't have to be hard, Ms. Walsh- we could make it real, real easy."

You smile the biggest, fakest, shittiest smile you're capable of tolerating. "We certainly could but I don't think you'd survive. ♪ Goodnight, Mr. Caldwell~♫"

You shut the door firmly behind him.

You lock the door.

You post a sign in the window.

You walk away.

You give it five seconds.

You have a good scream.

He will die. You will not breathe your last breath until you've made sure Caldwell's breathed his. If everything else fails then murdering that soulless son of a bitch is going to be your silver medal and no one is going to stop you.

He will pay.

He'll pay for everything he's done.

You just have to be patient. ♥

Take the scented candle to a place where you can relax and light it. Breathe in and out a few times. Reflect on what the chief thinks you and Parsons are versus what you actually are. Think about what it is he thinks he can help you with. Contemplate what's stopping you and Parsons from just obliterating the police department wholesale. Imagine how much fun it would be to do so regardless.

I got the impression while reading #218 (since she mentions seeing Cherry drive 'erratically' around), and it's basically confirmed here - mayor Parson's already close to the old library, checking on the event.
That might be important info to convey once we bounce back.

Also, Temperance's inner voice is everything but. I wonder if she picked her current pseudonym out of sheer irony?
Love the outburst.

Ah, customer service. I was expecting the complaints to be at least somewhat relevant, but “why isn’t the mayor personally doing my plumbing” definitely isn’t that. Mrs. Contextual has proved that she’s a master of her craft in dealing with them responsibly and efficiently, murderous urges aside.

While we’re in such a pissed off state, why not reminisce on why exactly we hate Caldwell so much? And wring out a curtain or something while we’re at it. That should get some of that rage out of our system, and help us focus on whatever’s happening with that lilin burst.
9th Aug 2022, 11:50 AM
Looking at the inventory I can only envy the depth of her pockets. I, as a male, am ashamed that the overall space of all my twenty-something pockets can't fit as much shit as Walsh has right now.

9th Aug 2022, 3:07 PM
An Ezquerra M9 sounds like a firearm... but why no spare ammunition in your inventory? You rely on melee attacks except for enemies that are mildly annoying to get close to?

Actually, that inventory is so much to unpack I could spend an entire post commenting on it, but I'll leave it there.

Except, Solomon Ring.

"Could it be ... ♪The Devil?♪"

Well, Kate is involved...

Caldwell thinks he's qualified to talk to handlers instead of dogs, but I'm not yet convinced that he himself is anything more than the alpha hound of Mondol's little pack. Tell him to send his own handler, next time.

Seeing as Temperance is willing to indulge in murderous fantasies at the very slightest of inconveniences, I'm not committing to backing her up on the murder even of him; not yet. Her drive for revenge could be some other hilariously petty offense she's internalized. Like, he took the last deviled egg (that she wanted) at the City Employee Potluck Dinner four months ago, or some shit.
9th Aug 2022, 3:31 PM
She strikes me as less whimsical than that. Too wise to develop such a grudge over trivial matters.

Now that I think about it again, that handler/dog imagery Caldwell uses sounds like he sees Temperance as the werewolf bodyguard of vampire Parsons, a classic arrangement for some authors. Probably not the first time anyone came up with that theory, I'm guessing (I don't hang in Discord).
9th Aug 2022, 6:02 PM

For a few years, I worked customer service for a power company - in NZ, the power companies are just retailers and the actual teams which maintain the lines/infrastructure are completely separate and unrelated organisations we had extremely limited ability to contact. "You fantasize about suplexing him through your desk." Big mood for that particular job haha
9th Aug 2022, 6:20 PM
Okay, few things to unpack here, no pun intended.

Her inventory is scary, lmao, in both size and content. I want pockets like that.

First off, the med kit seems to have seen use. Wonder if the unclean steak knife is related?

Incidentally, are the steak knives for... "Steak"? Self-defence, ritual? What about the gun? Modified and, as noted by someone else, no extra ammo.

She's got keys to a ritual room, a whole lotta candles, and a few other sketchy things that may be related. Bag of red dirt? Is the Solomon's Sinister Ring also related, or does that have power on its own?

She's got a whole bunch of burner phones. Does she perhaps have a bunch of shady contacts? Are the various notes related? Certainly seems to be keeping track of a lot.

What's on the USB labelled "BAD"?

Moving on, provided she's not lying, apparently the mayor's out there "trying to control the weather itself". Could mean Parsons isn't your average vampire. Alternatively, somebody else thought "The Devil" comment meant Kate, but might be literal? Vampires are considered monsters and they have a ritual room that possibly uses a lot of candles.

That final comment is also interesting, and we should probably take note of that since it's bolded. The Police Chief appears to have done something worth killing him over. Is that related to his seeming knowledge of the identity of Parsons/Temperance? If we were to search his pockets, would we find silver bullets?
11th Aug 2022, 6:40 PM
I think the weather bit was just sarcasm as she let her fury with the morons shine through just a teensy bit. xD

Perhaps that's why she has a few more whimsical items in her inventory, to let her calm down as she contemplates their silliness. The calming magic of "OH CRAB IT'S SUMMER!" cannot be denied. ;3

As you take the calming breaths to regain your sense of self control, having just permitted yourself the luxury of screaming your (metaphorical) head off, you start to question your state of mind... after all, seeing the body of the one who set you to such anger, even for such a brief moment that you're positive humanity doesn't have the means to record such a small time span, in the space where you should see yourself... that just isn't normal.

At first you think that bastard DID something... but the more logical part of your mind suggest that it's most likely a mental break, enough for perhaps a single synapse to burn out, yet no less his fault. Regardless, you don't need this stress.

A reasonable individual, you tack relaxation on to your itinerary, contemplating ideas for such while moving on to finish your current tasks.

Yes... I am enjoying this... hole in the matrix you left exposed. I can only hope I'm being subtle enough... though even like this, I'm left curious: which extra dimensional character will inevitably patch this out? How long can I keep this up?
