BOUNCE.OVRD

Red and yellow ports detected.

Momentum remains consistent.

Altering choir trajectory . . .

"Have you had an opportunity to check the sensors yet?" Her voice crackles through the phone. She's nervous, or the weather is affecting the signal strength. Or? No. Certainly both.

ERROR: Destination identification error.

Re-calibrating . . .

"I'm staring at them as we speak," you reply.

"Five lilin sensors were overloaded, the rest are untouched. You were right-- it must have been a concentrated blast."

"Now, when you say overloaded..."

"Fried," you state bluntly. "Five dead sensors. I doubt the damage is irreparable but it IS undoubtedly damage. Resetting the system may restore partial functionality to a few of them, but that'll take time. To really put this into perspective, we didn't design any shortcuts for a system reset. No one imagined a scenario where we'd need one. This is, as the parlance goes, a big deal."

Her voice sizzles louder, warping, distorting on its way through the speaker. You really doubt it's just the cell service going down. "Any chance it was a fluke?," she inquires. "An ionizing particle that scattered off the falling snow, mayhaps, orrr..."

"Oh, my sweet, innocent mayor ♥ if only all municipal government officials could be filled with so much hope. No, though, not a chance in hell. Those sensors were tested for up to 50 gigalilins. Unless ghosts have begun to spontaneously combust, a burst of lilins that size would take a tremendous amount of..." You pause. It's rare that you struggle for a word. Now you're getting nervous about this. "...Something. Something we haven't seen before."

"...Would it be possible to triangulate the source based on the position of the burned out sensors?," she asks. It's a good suggestion. Shame about the answer.

"No. Not with any real accuracy," you tell her. You've actually been going over the layout of that area in your head this entire time- but the burst was too large, and the sensors affected were too few to pin down a precise epicenter with. You don't know how far past each sensor the lilin wave extended, either. "We didn't position them with something like this in mind. It may have originated from one of MondolGroup's hideaways, or it could have come from the library. ...It may be prudent to remove yourself from the area."

"If it IS something Mondol is working on," she responds without pause, "then I'd much rather discover it in the testing phase, and not when they decide to march the finished product into my office."

Begrudgingly

you accept that she has a point. "How ♪are♪ things going on your end?"

"Uneventfully, I must say. I spotted one of those automated buses acting erratically, but I suspect it's just a side effect of the explosion- the EMF shell on all those lilins sparking a malfunction in the navigation systems or some such, I'm not quite sure. The snow is making it increasingly difficult to see, and the shifting barometric pressure is hindering my other senses. ...Perhaps you've the right of it," she finally concedes. "I shall start heading back soon if I find nothing else worth investigating."

"Call me back if you DO find something," you insist. "I'm ♪quite sure♪ I'll be here when you return."

"Of course." You can tell from her tone that she's smiling.

You can also tell from how badly she's cutting out that she's really sweating this one.

Well.

Not literally sweating.

You hang up the phone, and rise to your feet.

Your name is largely contextual.

Your age is up for debate. You are not a secretary.

You take a long look at the screen.

Second thoughts.

You can't triangulate anything by the initial event, but it wouldn't be impossible for an explosion of well over 50 gigalilins to leave some traces behind. If you can get the dead sensors to reset before that lingering fades, you may be able to get a clearer picture of where the whole thing started.

Or: Little Miss Mayor's strained optimism is rubbing off on you. You're speculating based on nothing of substance. Resetting the sensors would take time and require your attention at regular intervals. It's likely there's already a cavalcade of local yokels lining up at your empty desk, eager to complain that it's snowing. Returning to your ""job"" may be the wiser choice for avoiding overall suspicion and, more importantly, cutting down on the sheer volume of good ol' fashioned mountainfolk pissin' and moanin' you'll no doubt be subjected to once you return to your post.

(Yeehaw.)

You would hate to miss the chance to figure out this lilin burst situation. You would also hate to return to a freshly burned down mayor's office. You are not going to rush up and downstairs in a desperate bid to manage both like some sitcom dual-identity dating scenario.

Honestly, Y'all, I say we stay as quiet as humanly possible. We *do not* want them to become aware of us/more aware of us than they already are. Plus, it would be interesting to see how someone would handle having... us around, but getting nothing but silence. Would they be able to tell?

I say we channel strong relaxation vibes and give Tempy a "hunch" that Mondol had nothing to do with the Big Whammy, so it's nothing to put much effort into. (And the best part is, it's 100% true!) No, it'd be much more productive (i.e. hilarious) to deal with all the local yokels.

- Quick diagnostic check, see if we can pinpoint the exact time of the Event. It might be useful later.
- Better go help the townspeople, we need to keep up appearances.

WILD THEORY TIME:

(minor BiM spoilers) Is that Liz with dyed hair? The sprites look really similar, especially height, and her rumored physical capabilities would fit with Mine's reconstruction job. Both are sort of secretaries. The fleshy bits of the room also could follow easily from some of the research that Finch and Fuse and the cultist dude who I've forgotten the name of were doing. Am I completely crazy or am I on to something?

I wonder if it would be possible to figure out where the lilin sensors are positioned. When we get back to Plaire, we could see if Marlow has any idea what Temperance and Rill are talking about.
30th Jul 2022, 3:02 PM
PurpleKetchup
I dunno about the whole stealth thing.
It's almost guaranteed that Plaire's library antics are linked to this current situation... and we can provide helpful info that can bump our (Choir) standing with the Mayor, which would transfer to our future host(s) when we eventually BOUNCE back.

I'd be all for it if we hit Mondol stuff, but these guys' only problem with Plaire so far is the information wall. We can show goodwill first and help with that situation later as reward.
Plus I'm almost sure Temperance didn't detect us yet only due to being focused on this critical event. I'm slightly surprised she's not well protected against noospheric connections, considering what she probably knows.

Anyway, from what I see so far...
- we help her with our clues to keep her focused on the crisis and away from us (which may not work, but hey we helped a bit). I'd go for that myself.
- we explicitely get her attention and start negotiating our info for whatever help she can grant Plaire (which may also not work, but hey no bad feelings).
- we try to guess what her usual routine could be and push towards that, which will definitely blow up in our collective faces at a very inconvenient later point (not good but not technically bad per se)...
- <del>we spy on her stuff all creepy-like, and</del> yeah no sorry I won't even consider that one, seriously. Count me out of that route.
30th Jul 2022, 5:24 PM
I don’t think building goodwill will transfer well to Plaire at all. And it can possibly backfire if we’re meddling too hard in her direction, and upsets the mayor or the assistant. If Mrs. Largely Contextual figures anything out, then great, but we shouldn’t point her towards that ourselves. And making ourselves obvious would only backfire more drastically if it doesn’t work.
The best course of action to let things play out would be the third one you offered. We don’t need to guess her usual routine itself; after all, this seems to be an emergency situation, and acting normally would be weird and unusual. Rather, we should just stick to our usual routine and keep mum about anything we know otherwise. This is basically chapter one all over again; we don’t need to force things, and we don’t need to try and manipulate anyone’s feelings. We just chill, and offer our usual opinions and suggestions. We’re reasonable most of the time, and if Mrs. Contextual decides to do something else we didn’t suggest then that’s fine. Let things ride, and have a light touch overall.
30th Jul 2022, 6:04 PM
PurpleKetchup
I can get behind that reasoning.
The last thing I want is our presence here and now adding extra problems for Plaire with the Mayor down the line.

Red and Yellow ports connect, then there's a visual with Red and Yellow conduits immediately present. Also, a similar Orange conduit...

Well, not actionable at the moment. I'll keep a mental note.

If Parsons is out, then she probably headed out to investigate something prior to the lilin explosion. That, which I expect was the ghost bomb, was not long ago; Parsons either deploys hella fast, or she was already scoping out something on the north side.

You already know which it is, Temperance, but consider Reflecting on that point.

Now, Get Those Lilin Sensors Rebooted. I'm surprised you're even considering any other course of action. How many things do you know of that can generate a spike of fifty gigalilins? I'm guessing not many, seeing as, and I quote, "No one imagined a scenario where we'd need [a fast system reset]. This is, as the parlance goes, a big deal."

The subset of fifty gigalilin phenomena that are also innocuous enough to be safe to ignore is not going to be a big set.

The mayor can shove her optimism where the sun don't shine, and the locals can torch the mundane office space for all you care. You know this is major; you need to make a priority of it.

I also would like to know more about the ghost stuff than I would about people complaining about the snow. After all, there isn't anything we can do about the snow, the people whose jobs are to deal with that are already on the ball or we will know why later. Putting up a sign or phone message that says "gone home before I get snowed in" might not be a bad idea. After all, locked doors make the general public a lot easier to ignore.
